Among the input devices for computers and control units, the desktop joystick with its many variants represents a solution when motion commands are to be passed onto control elements in the EDP. With the help of a central control lever, the joystick movement can for example be transferred to a machine. In addition, the desktop joystick is equipped with a desktop housing that may have additional switches and buttons. Before deciding on special joystick models, such as desktop joysticks or mini joysticks, the operation area must also be taken into account. There are two basic variations: digital and analog joysticks. In the digital version the alignment of the control lever is detected but the deflection angle or the actuating pressure is not detected, as only ‘On’ or ‘Off’ are transmitted to the control unit. Desktop joysticks are available in analog form for use in applications where fine movement is required.

Desktop joysticks allow the measurement of the displacement angle of the axes, that is the main difference to their digital counterpart. This is made possible by the use of potentiometers that can accurately measure the position of the control lever. This also enables the joystick to put the z axis next to the x- and y- axes. The z- axis is activated by turning the control lever.
